Vegetarian? WTF?

January 29th, 2005 by Josh Houghtelin

Zippy was making “Vegetarian Chilli” last night when I asked her “why not toss in some meat?”. Her reply is “cuz you won't miss it”. The problem there is, I will. I thoroughly enjoy eating meat. I tried to explain that to her and she just said “fine, I decided you don't get any”. Simple enough I guess. The problem is I don't know why she eats meat sometimes and other times goes way outta her way to not eat meat so I decided to investigate the topic myself. Why vegetarian? When did all this happen and who the heck started such a crazy thing?

When…
Vegetarianism has actualy had a looong life of crazy ups and downs for 100's of reasons. Supposedly we humans 'could' have been the farmer types before we actualy realized we could eat meat and during that period of time. With that said we 'could' have initialy started out as vegatarians and been that way for thousands of years. Also a long time ago when religion came into play that seemed to be a fade in on some aspects to being vegan. Enough said, it started waaaaaaaaaaay long ago.

Why…
This part confused me the most. Why would you avoid tossin that huge hunk of half raw, nearly bleeding, tastier then hell, piece of steak in your mouth? Heres why.

Taste - If you don't like the flavor yer not gunna eat it. This is combated with the fact that all meat has diferent flavors n' textures. I would consider smoeone lying to me if they told me they didn't like the taste of all meat.

Religion - This one puts an awsome twist on religion as we know it plus makes a little sense. Many religions from the dawn of time have believed that animals have souls like us humans. (I can understand that. Were all alive in some way or another) So it would be blasphemous to kill another being as all souls are created equal. It's even stated in the bible “god gave us all the sead bearing plants to eat n' use as we will” and “though shalt not kill”. Both of those although not saying “DON'T EAT ANIMALS” are almost hitting it on the nose. But, all religions these days seem to eat meat, you've never heard of a lost soul of a cat have ya? N' everyone ignores the fact that there are many things pointing to god being vegan but that doesn't matter. Monks were on a different line when they went vegan as they saw eating meat as a spoiler to their own soul. It brought out the 'animal' in them and fucked with their true, clean, spirit. heh. (that one I don't believe to be right. but I'm still listening).

Health - This can be argued both ways. Some people think meats essential with lots of protiens and all the other good shit that comes with eating the blood n' meat of another being. Some people think meat in it's cooked form is nearly useless in health values. Either way you deal the cards if you look up “healthy” on google it'll list lots of fruits n' vegetible diet mixes (although make note you will NOT see the word vegetarian if your simply searching up “healthy diets”)

Morals - This is where most the kids these days get their vegan(ism) from. They simply don't like the idea of slaughtering animals. whoooopty doo. I realy don't care. I'll go out n' kill a litter of squirrels for quirrel biscut n' gravy before breakfast but a lot of people see slaughterhouses & the general killing of any animal as wrong, evil, torture, etc. I guess if the new fad is to hate on Mc. Donalds slaughter houses then thats how it is. It's an easy way to go vegan and can't realy be argued to much. God does say “though shalt not kill” (doesn't explicitly mean humans). I will argue going completely vegan at this point though. If I'm going to house an animal such as a chicken, give it a nice clean, comfortable place to live, I am going to get something in return. I don't go to work everyday all day for nothing. Those chickens would produce eggs. just as the cows would produce milk. I still can't make the connection there to going completely vegan. thats beyond me.

Who…
EVERYONE.. Everyone with a reason they have the nuts to stand behind has power to extend the vegan legacy. BOATLOADS of celebrities are vegan including but not limited to Leonardo da Vinci, Pink, Bob Barker, Clint Eastwood, Shania Twain, Chelsea Clinton, Arnold Schwarzenegger and many many many more. Leo's kinda in tehre on his own but there are a buncha important people in his timeframe that went veg to I just can't find their names.

Conclusion…
The conclusion I've come to is that it is obvious that vegetables are the base of a good diet. You don't see many diets recommending you eat 5 hunks of meat a day. heh. I also believe it is 100% possible to live a healthier lifestyle being a vegetarian of sorts because it means you are actualy actively noting your diet. Your not eating everything that passes by within your grasp like most americans. I think simply not eating MEAT could be a healthy choice if it was taken from a health standpoint. I believe I will, from now on, choose to eat vegetables and soy based products where meat is 'generaly' the food of choice becuase of it's health benefits. I will however not claim vegetarian of any form. I would be hating myself if I couldn't eat meat becuase I thoroughly enjoy the taste and feel of eating good tasting meat. Plus, I do far to many bad things to my body to want to become vegan. it'd just be stupid to limit the pleasures of a nice big greeezy burger once in a while when I'm already taking in so many bad products for my body that I know I will not stop doing.

Notes…
when going vegan for the health standpoint it should be noted that cooking food destroys most of it's nutritional value. There is a LOT of information out there about eating raw food becuase cooking food is much less healthy then eating it raw. Thats not to say the raw food isn't sanitary. Eating unsanitary food would be the dumbest thing anyone can do. Raw food retains more nutritional value then cooked food. Bottom line.

ps - I'll have a “Health” folder up in the nav menu soon with links of mirrored websites I ganked all the information I used for this little blog.
