AMD Hammer…. struggle.
So I upgrade my personal PC. It now sports an AMD Athlon 64 Processor, Nforce3 mobo/chipset, Radeon 128meg video card, 120GB Seagate SATA HDD, DVD/CD RW n' it's lit up with more lights then my moms house on X-mas.
I shot for the XP64bit OS but couldn't isntall it to my SATA drive cuz of lack of drivers (plus I didn't search for any ones that would work with it). Instantly gave up n' tossed XP on it.
I fiddled around with XP for less than a few hours until I decided this PC must have enough power to run XFree86 pretty damn smooth so I started the Fbsd install. I started with the miniinst.iso cd of BSD64 setup 5.2… Not a bad start. BSD sees my SATA drive as an ata33 device *sigh* gunna be working on fixing that. I guess theres some goofy shit with the nforce3 motherboard setup.
After getting the OS running I started the install/setup for a few things.
Xfree86 w/kde *still compiling*
Bash2
SSHD
IRCclient
Thats kiiinda where I'm paused at right now until X gets done installing. I'm a lamer n' havn't realy done any 'configuring' of a whole lot. The ports collection saves my lame ass installing and finding software.
My goal this time around running FreeBSD as a desktop is to figure out whats goin on. lol. I”ve played with BSD, I've setup BSD boxes to do everything anyones every needed anything for. *Stable serving dot all* lol. But beyond making a DHCP server, SAMBA server, Quakeserver, router etc, basicly single-use setups with no in-depth education or setup involved. This time around I'm taking an alternative route to education. *Thats what it is this time around, education*
As stupid as it sounds I'm going through the 'minimum' install of BSD with a few extra packages like X. heh. and examining all the files. After learning wtf all the files are there for I 'should' know whats goin on right? prolly not but thats how I'm doin it.
Last but not least, I'm going to use this BSD box to *dun dun dun* host my own personal domain with some silly services n' programs mostly geared towards a centralized, easily accessible yet expendible *I can crash it if I want* programmig enviornment. I've finaly got someone to code shit w/me *motivational force to code shit* so let the destruction begin…
If your reading this n' wanna tear shit up on a fast BSD server lemme know. I'll toss a shell to anyone who wants one *shrug* it's only on 3meg cable but it's almost lagless. fun fun. Let the learning begin.
