IMHO this is complete crap.

“The state of Alaska has been waiting a long time to let the United States of America, which they’re part of, share in their abundance of oil, and today we finally have said that it’s time,”

Get a clue. They even quote it’ll take 10 years to pull that crap out of there to hit our market. Why mess with it now? Create a new energy source. Call me a tree hugger but do we realy need to tear up more of our landscape?

“Using backdoor tactics to destroy America’s last great wild frontier will not solve our nation’s energy problems and will do nothing to lower skyrocketing gas prices,” Sen. Maria Cantwell (search) D-Wash., argued in calling for opposition to drilling.

Think: RENEWABLE Energy Resources. ***

Wood ( Renewable Biomass )
Hydro-Electric
Solar
Wind
Wave
Tidal
Fusion
Ocean Thermal Energy conversion.

If it interests you, there are links to give you atleast an idea of how each work. I’m interested in wind & solar power since that is what seems easiest to attain here in Missouri. If you are interested in other resources you can start by searching google with the term “Off the grid” since that is obviously how we will have to attack the situation since our own governing body won’t.

Has very many people seen an oilrig? Or, even can comprehend the necessary infrastructure to support the rig? Yeah, ok, today’s technology has reduced the ‘foot-print’ of an oilrig. The footprint isn’t what kills, divides and pollutes the surrounding area. There will always be some spilled oil, (you can’t get around that) I’ll even secede that point. But what about the light pollution, noise pollution, odors and the roads and traffic and just plain old human presents?

Alaska is an area where humans have very little to no effect on the immediate environment. Do we really need the profits for the rich and forever change this pristine environment?
