Everybody needs a coder… right?
The owner of an IT firm in Warrensburg (’bout 30 minutes from here) came to visit w/me today. One of his employees is a good friend of mine and when asked “who codes” he told him to come talk to me.
“Yeah, whenever I need something, I just ask him and get it the next day”.
Helping people out gratis almost always comes back around for me. Chuck has helped me out with quite a bit of business in the past & I help him out w/his game server n’ stuff. Anyway.
Apparently Steve, the guy who owns the IT firm, was impressed with what I showed him & is interested in bringing me on to help develop some projects. There is a litte problem though. Steve is a Micro$oft guy. He has a light understanding of .NET and no knowledge of any languages I actively use. After working with some previous developers he wants to be able to read the code I produce so we must come to some sort of conclusion in order to proceed w/business.
The idea of just developing software is realy nice. Never deal with the customer. Never worry about the bill. Just make stuff. I like that idea. I talked with Steve for ’bout 2 hours & he made it clear he could keep me busy (and some). Is this where I break down, stop being a hater, and learn .NET ? I’m already doing everything he is doing & wants done but not in M$FT. He wants desktop app front ends in .NET (where I use TK) backened by MSSQL (where I use MySQL) and sometimes supported w/a some Web accesibility probably in ASP.NET (where I use ruby/PHP)
He seemed pretty open to anything I’d be willing to do. You can make any code readable by anyone who has the slightest understanding of ‘coding’ in general just by commenting the piss out of it. But on the other hand, most all of his people have already purchased all the M$ stuff and are using it. Probably wouldn’t be to hot of an idea to let their MSSQL rot away having MySQL take over after they have paid for their MSSQL subscription.
We’ll see how/where this goes. You guys have any tips for handling this situation? I’m leaning toward giving .NET a shot.

Josh,
I feel for you with your situation. I also know that sometimes we have to lower our standards to get a step ahead in life. You and I have had many conversations about work in the big cities and what is out there. The money that is being paid to some of these people is crazy. We both also know that you like myself have no formal education. I am not saying this is a bad thing it just limits the doors that are open to us. I learned long ago that doors only open once so take a step through while you can.
Lets look at this another way. If you stay where you are right now using the programs you like. You have limited yourself to half of the total equation. If you learn .net then you have the best of both worlds and have to take a back seat to no one. Having the whole thing computes to $$$$$$$.
Good luck with your decision!
P.S. I already know your decision as you will not settle for second best…..LOL
