Entertainment on the road

March 7th, 2006 by Josh Houghtelin

I managed spending the weekend w/Zippy and we got a new family member but I will get into that when I have more time.

Strange relationship with distance.
I think everyone has some strange trigger to distance traveled. If you’re on a motorcycle feel when your tank is nearly empty or if the road you drive daily is squirrely you might count the corners. Some people focus on the time. I drove 140 miles, it’s been two hours hasn’t it? Maybe you don’t drive a whole lot so you judge your overall distance by when your next oil change is. 1,000 more miles and it’s time to change the oil again. The most notoriuos thought measuring distance in my head, as strange as it seems, is how many times I could have driven to my friend Jesko’s house. Jesko (Zippy’s brother & my family/friend) lives in Little Falls, Minnesota about ~600 miles away from my house in Clinton, Missouri.[map] I find myself thinking “I could have just driven to Jesko’s house. Damnit. I wanna go.”. What is your strange distance association?

Do you wave?
I got bored today and started waving at people. After a while I ended up on the interstate (no oncomming traffic) after getting 50 people to wave back. I waved at everyone I saw. hehe. Here are the simple/strange things I noticed.

  • Old ladies seem to never wave back although may see you.
  • Middle aged women seem to never notice, see, or care about the drivers of oncomming traffic thus rarely wave.
  • Middle aged men have the best chances of noticing you and waving back.
  • You may not see a Cemi Truck drivers wave becuase they rarely lift their hands far enough above the dash for us lowly non-rig drivers to see.(and I’m in a truck. hah).
  • the earlier you make your wave noticeable, the better the odds of getting a wave in return.
  • Being in a town immediately skyrockets the rate of return on waves.
  • I’ve driven thousands of miles within Missouri alone. I’m pretty sure being a proffesional driver is not a viable option for me.

I’m the type of person that in one minute i’m in one place and when i wake up, we’re there… even when i’m in the middle of the ocean.

cost. cost is how i measure distance. It would cost me about $350 to get to your house and back, just in gas.

Ha ha, I was hoping you’d be a professional driver. You have quite a few miles on the road in a Semi-truck. (j/k)
Landscape affects the distance verses how long a drive actually is. If the road is flat and boring the miles drag on and on, if there are some interesting things to see then the miles fly by really fast.

I will disagree with you there dad. If the road is flat and boring. I. Haul. Ass… Foot on the floor, wake me when we get there. If the road is super curvy I get pissed and it drags on forever. Highway 160 between West Plaines and Doniphan missouri is completely retarded like that [map] although the hilly scenery is realy nice.

I have found however that time flies extremely fast when I hook up my laptop to the car radio and crank out my NPR playlist. I realy get into the NPR radio.

But yes. I have quite a few miles logged in my lifetime. Not nearly the millions you have but I would say many more than your average 23 year old. I just can’t attain the feeling of accomplishment from driving in any way at all and I pretty much strive on feeling accomplished.
