Lost on Prospect
Last night I drove up to Kansas City by myself to skate some curbs and stairs. I ended up having some trouble and got stuck on Linwood and Prospect. Since I was pretty much stuck there and Prospect street is supposed to be “THE” ghetto of Kansas City I decided to walk the whole street and see what I ran into. I didn’t cover the whole street but I saw most of it.
Prospect & Lockridge (see the crime watch sign? lol)

It really doesn’t seem all that ghetto to me.

The only thing ghetto about prospect is the bars full of black people and a fish and/or chicken joint every block.
Prospect Fish Works

Since I was in the “ghetto” I decided to hit up a gas station for a 22oz Budweiser and took it to Popeyes for an 8 piece chicken dinner for $4. hehe.

Good fun. I did manage walking into the wrong bar and got kicked out for whatever reason. I guess skinny white guys arn’t welcome. It was interesting being the minority. I also got hit up by a bunch of bums but that is almost to be expected. I wish it had been a little warmer though. I got quite chilly walking all the way down prospect. It’s not exactly a short street. Next time I’ll skate it in the daylight.

I can’t decide if you are brave or reckless.
Let’s settle on lucky.

I spent my pre-teen and early teen years on the north side of a significantly worse ghetto. I’m comfortable on the streets at night. Wananbe thugs and gangsters are people too and can be punked down just as easy as they can punk people down. It’s when you get lured into an alley or between project housing that you get into trouble. I was 13 the last time I let a group of pathetic street thugs get the best of me. It doesn’t take much to outsmart em if you don’t let the fear get the best of you.
I wouldn’t call it brave or wreckless. I’d call it bored.

My son wanders the worst parts of downtown Toronto, buying coffee for the runaways, drug addicts and homeless on the street. He doesn’t see the dangers I see. Their plight is not invisible to him. I applaud his caring heart…but at the same time my own heart is worried sick.

HA HA…. Just like you’r old man. I used to walk the streets of down town Chicago, right in the heart of it all. I shoulda gotten my as beat by somebody.
I’d go on weekend pass from the Navy School and head straight there. 5 bucks in my pocket. $1.50 got ya a whopper meal $2.00 in a theater that had Three, yep three Chinese kung foo flicks.
then that night we’d stay at the shelter. Hmm. plactic covered beds. In the morning we got a hot breakfast and sermon. Later that day I’d head back to the base.
Thanks for the memories Josh!
PS
Josh has been all over the USA, he’s seen it all.
