Zippy recognized ‘Hefeweizen’ from her trip to Germany so we picked up a six pack of Widmer Brothers Hefeweizen beer. The Widmer Brothers website claims their Hefeweizen to be their flagship beer and America’s Original Hefeweizen.
“Hefe” means yeast, “Weizen” means wheat. Hefeweizen is a top fermented, unfiltered, bottle conditioned wheat beer with a noticeable yeast sediment and a cloudy appearance.

I found Widmer Brothers Unfiltered Wheat Beer to be a little bitter. Zippy and I shared four beers out of the six pack. The first two took one for the team and got tossed in the trash since we had them at the local tennis court last night when the police decided to profile us. We drank them straight from the bottle without an orange or lemon slice. I would drink it again but with it’s slightly bitter taste it’s not in my top 10. I would prefer a Boulevard Wheat overhis. I expected a less bitter and more mellow fruity taste. Live and learn.
I haven’t asked Zippy what her thoughts on this Portland, Oregon born Wheat Beer but I believe her tastes are right in line with mine. I know she really likes the Wheat beer from our local brewery out of Kansas City, Boulevard.
They make that stuff out here. It is just OK. Not terrible but not great. We have a lot of better micro brews out here than that particular one.
Damn!… after my trip to Oktoberfest, i can’t get enough of german beer. That’s what I had when i was there, “hefavisen” although, their w is pronounced like a v. Another fav over there was Pilsner… it’s a different type of brewing than hefavisen. But in Prague, I think the beer there was just as awesome, and a few germans i met agree that Czech beer is comparable to german beer, if not better. The Czech have Pils-urqel, and Budwieser (which i liked better than the pils). anyhoo, that started the hole wikipedia history lesson on what the difference is between american bud and czech bud.
anyhoo… japan doesn’t have much of a selection when it comes to beer. i think i’ve mentioned this before, but it pisses me off so much that i guess i just had to put it out there again. anyhoo, here’s to trying new things! (/me says as he raises his glass of Kirin)

Andy — Yeah, this beer was off the shelf from Walmart’s selection. Just something new. I’m looking forward to visiting a couple micro breweries this summer.
Tiller — You are on a red wine kick aren’t you? The beer selection here is endless if you find the right water hole. ^_^
