The Planet - Why promote good customers?

Josh Houghtelin Rants

I’ve had a server with EV1, now ThePlanet, for something like 4 years. I started with an inexpensive economy server in the $100 - $200/month price range. I’ve always managed it myself and have always paid the bill on time. I have to say the service they offer is darn good. I’m not in any way unsatisfied with it. I am however a little bummed that they don’t offer anything in the way of benefits to customers who have been with them for years. I talked to them today about upgrading my server to a more powerful one because of the amount of data I process. I’ve got a few databases that exceed 5 million records and I really need something more than a starter server to crunch the data in a timely fashion. What bums me out is they don’t even offer a migration plan. I have to upgrade to a new server as if I was buying the service as a new customer. This means I have to pay for two servers for the length of time it takes me to upgrade to the new one. I know I’m nit picking and being a cheap ass but wouldn’t you expect they would be interested in at least offering some kind of promotion to keep me as a customer? Especially a good paying customer who wants to upgrade their account to a more costly one?

Anyway, I just wanted to rant about that a little bit. For the record I am thoroughly satisfied with the service I have been provided which is going to put ‘The Planet‘ at the top of my list. I will however be examining some other options such as collocation. I need some serious processing power and have been considering ColoPronto. If you have any services from ColoPronto, let me know what you think.
