I’m taking a look at Picasa Web Albums trying to decide if I’d like to use it as my photo storage utility when a common thought came to me. How much does google know about me? It’s almost unnerving how much they know.
I use…
Google Search (web, code search, etc)
Google Email
Google Calendar
Google Reader
Google homepage
Google Analytics
Google Maps
Google Video
Google Projects
Google Documents
Google News
and I have an account for..
Google Orkut
Google Blogger
Google Page creator
Google Groups
Above, when I said I ‘use’, I really use those services. I have all my email accounts go through google email, I have a ton of documents in google docs, google reader and google home page know about nearly everything I read and update myself on. Google news updates me daily on topics of interest I like to stay updated on. Google analytics knows nearly everything about all of my 40+ websites. Google video hosts a good portion of my videos albiet mostly the olders ones. Google Documents hosts a lot of my shared work documents. I’ve searched directions to most everywhere I’ve gone the first time on google maps. I use google chat here and there on top of google talk (voice chat). And to top it all off Google search is my staple search engine.
Is there a point that I (you or me) should be concerned that I (you or me) am using too many services from one provider?
BTW: I don’t like how google prices picasa use so I don’t believe I will be using it.

40 GB ($75.00 USD per year)
150 GB ($250.00 USD per year)

Have you ever read the short story “Scroogled”?
If you haven’t it might be worth the read for you:

That’s quite the interesting story. It reminds me of the first years of the internet when everyone who claimed to be a “hacker” seemed to be seriously concerned about being anonymous. That concern has obviously slipped quite a bit. Shoot, now if you are going to get hired as a programmer it seems the more results you get in a vanity search the more points you get towards the hire. Taking the progress of the internet into account with that fictional story it seems sad life happens so unpredictibly fast.
And here I am thinking, “Atleast I don’t live in China”.
As if I’m seriously concerned it would seem the only thing helping me keep my sanity is my close ties with state government bodies. But then again I’m one of those people trying to help government search better. And guess what? We use google.
I think this will spark a lot more posts on my behalf about local government & the software they use. Not in a “the governemnt is out to get us” sort of way. More in a “the public should know how things work” sort of way.
