Blackberries are awesome!

Filed under: Tech, Hardware — Josh Houghtelin @ 12:16 pm

I got a blackberry a while back through work because I was mutilating the family plan I have for Zippy and I. I didn’t have much in the way of options for a smart phone so I ended up picking out a blackberry. I finally got around to unlocking the darn thing so I switched my personal phone and work phone sims and got the unlimited data package from t-mobile which was surprisingly only $20/month. With that change in place I started surfing around the net and really learning what the blackberry can do. I didn’t even know it was hugely java based.

Needless to say, I am now thoroughly enjoying this swiss army knife of phones. I downloaded and installed a million applications and have found a few to be quite useful. Time management tools, email, gmail, and instant messaging are definitely at the top of my most-used applications list. If any of you reading this have a blackberry I would appreciate any software suggestions or usability tips you might have.

Migration Server

Filed under: Hardware, BSD — Josh Houghtelin @ 10:44 am

I just purchased a new server I will be using to update and migrate all my current projects to. I hope to incur zero downtime during the migration process but ya never know. I haven’t leased a dedicated server from this company before so we’ll see how it goes. It’s about time I got everything updated and upgraded. I’m just trying to get out of the server that hosts all my blogs and projects becuase I’ve been on it for something in the ballpark of four years. It’s been quite reliable but it’s time to do a complete software/hardware upgrade.

Let the configuring… BEGIN!

The Holiday Season is all the reason I need.

Up until today the largest LCD I had was 19″. Now my main gaming box slash file server at home (Haqur) is the proud new recepticle of this fine little 26″ Widescreen LCD. My living room currently sports two main computers. I have a small PC hidden below the entertainment center connected to my 26″ boob tube via Svideo cable. It has been my main entertainment center for quite sometime. Behind the boob tube is where my gaming/file serving pc otherwise known as Haqur resides. Haqur has been the main control center of the house since it has over a terabyte of storage, dvd burner, firewire, and a video capture card in it. Unfortunately, until today, it has been gimped by a 15″ square LCD. Now that I have remedied that issue I am quite satisfied with my current multimedia situation. Everything is already connected to the surround sound stereo system I got last christmas from Rowdy (Thanks Rowdy!). Now I just need to put a few more 500g sata drives so I can employ some kind of mirroring. The only thing worse than running out of space is losing space you had.

w00t. A widescreen LCD!

It should also let us see how badass the graphics really are on the Xbox 360 that’s currently attached to the regular TV. Bring on the Need for Speed… Carbon baby! hehe. And I suppose some Halo 2 for all the newbs I live with that can’t handle the real deal (Quake). Hehe. JAB!

New server at work.

Filed under: Work, Hardware — Josh Houghtelin @ 9:29 am

w00t. I put together a new server for work. I’m not a hardware guy by any means so the computer itself probably isn’t as ‘hardcore’ as it could be but that doesn’t negate the fact that it is always fun replacing old hardware with fresh new stuff. I would have to say I especially enjoy doing so when it’s scheduled like this operation was rather then being an emergency repair. I came into work after hours a couple days ago and blingo blango took everything offline for about 2 hours and it all worked as it should when it came back up. *Hugs FreeBSD* Too simple.

All the services from the old server (the 4u rack mount at the top) have been shut down but I can’t bring myself to decommission the machine from the network. Good, lasting hardware rocks. More automated backups. lol.

A pic amidst getting things re-organized.
New server @ work.
